It's all over from here, folks. Pokemon Beta will cease comic updates.

I'm deeply sorry about this. I am. It makes me very sad. Especially if it feels like out of the blue to you all.
I grew up with this story since 2009, basically since half a year I started regularly USING the internet!
I was proud of myself that I managed to start my own comic in 2010, without anyone's help. I'd been inspired by other comics like STLE, Mokepon, Just Gotta, Romeo, and others- I made quite a few friends too because of this comic, I found out.
It's been with me through an important part of my life.
It's shown me if I put my mind to something, I can do it.
I know I didn't update it often, at best of times only once a week. Then put up a big month or two of hiatus between chapters. Because of that, compared to my fellow peers here who make poke'comics, I didn't have much in the way of fans. (I mostly blame not having a cool animated banner xD)

I wanted a more original Pokemon story, something cool. And I liked what I made, it entertained me, at least. And that's all that mattered. It's been so rad to have folks comment and respond to them. Thank you all so much, from the bottom of my heart. I do like the story, though by now I see how flawed it is and how flawed it'll still be were I to continue it.

You might be asking, why?
Well, as I was working on chapter 8...I woke up one morning, and realized that.....this comic is taking too long to produce. I stopped deluding myself about how much of my life the comic was eating. Writing would take a month, granted I didn't work on it daily...but the drawing- getting the lineart of 30 pages done took a month, coloring another 2, and...there goes a third of a year. Finishing the comic would take another 2 years. And that's full-time working on it.

This. Fact. Heavily. Depresses me.
I get this...panicking surge of anxiety about how I'm wasting away my life for this.
I'm in my 20s now.
This can't go on. It just can't.
I have to graduate college next year.
I have to get a job.
I have to somehow convince folks my art is worth paying for and get a job I don't hate(hopefully with my art).
I have to save up to ensure the next time I see the love of my life I don't have to leave them for years after spending only a week with them irl. I want to create stories and enrich people's lives but...this comic wasn't doing that. Not enough to warrant the hours, days, weeks, MONTHS I spend.
I've not gotten the growth of fans other comics have, and, even if I did, I've realized Smackjeeves is a very small pond comparatively. It wouldn't mean much in the end for my career, and I'm an artist, and that's what I need to spend my time on- getting a bigger audience, getting paid, stuff people scoff at and say 'sellout' to a creative just trying to pay bills. But I digress.

It was a good project I learned a LOT from doing.'s ran its course. I've noticed as I worked on it I'm trying to rush through it, get it out of my way. I'm sorry to follow suit of my fellow comickers I've grown side-by side with, but it's time to just move on.

I HAVE been working on an original comic, however. I'll still be using this account to upload some of it here on smackjeeves- and I'll probably put an unchaptered update here to notify ya'll if you're interested. It's finished now, so it has something this comic doesn't. But it's very...different.
And much shorter- only 65 pages. It took me two years to complete, as well. And it may be the last foray into comics I have for a long time.

All this sad news aside, if you have an interest in me, or my art, etc, then I recommend following my tumblr: <--i have it as archive just so you can see my work at a glance.

Thanks so much for all your time here, with me. Oh, and, yes, the picture here is Barlo, his brother Paulis, and their sister Ivy when they were kids, before the Trygon happened.

If you all have questions, perhaps I'll make an art post answering them. I dunno. Either way, thanks again for reading this comic and this post.

Could you perhaps give us a small summary of what was going to happen for the rest of the story, so we could have some sort of closure? I do adore these characters and it's a shame to see them go, but I understand.

Going through similar circumstances myself, I completely understand. Webcomics are fun and this one is one of the greats in my own opinion, but real life comes first. You have given us a wonderful story and I wish you luck on doing the same on a professional level.

Until then, stay golden and thanks for the memories.

I really enjoyed Pokemon Beta, and I am sad to see it go. But I understand that you have a life to live, so go and do it! Thank you for giving us a good comic. :D

Sad to see it go, but I do have some advice :) it did anger me a little that updates weren't more frequent, but over time the concern over frequency just died out with the pile-on of other things to do/read.
As a fellow author, I want to give you a bit of parting advice, weither you follow it or not is totally up to you.

- You DON'T need some flashy fancy banner to attract attention to your comic. People will come if the premise and art are good enough to attract their interest.
- Don't make it some horrid chore that eats up your time. I know this seems easier said than done, but a good story is something you should enjoy as much, if not more so than your readers.
- Write in your spare time I'm guilty of procrastination, and often don't finish writing a chapter until it's time to start lining and posting pages. I keep a thumbnail sheet on me to draw on whenever to moment strikes so that I can keep writing.
-Know when to take a break I find it painfully obvious that this comic was horribly unkind to you >: Sometimes mine is too much for me. when you have a comic you create and love from the bottom of your heart, it's okay to take a breather once in a while.
and finally
-Don't sweat it :) should you make another comic one day, it'll come when it's ready. don't try to force it if you're not feeling it. (no matter what the experts say)

It was a good ride while it lasted, and I look forward to seeing your work once more, be it on SJ, or over on tumblr. You have a good life, and good luck on your job hunting ^^

I totally understand the feeling.

This is a sad post.
I won't lie this was one of my favorite comics and even one of the few I posted on occasionally, I will miss it.
But life and being able to feed oneself comes first, so I hope wherever you end up after graduation keeps you well fed.
Should you ever make another comic, I will enjoy it thoroughly.
Welcome to the big pond of being a responsible adult, try not to abondon your childhood joys along the way. (That path leads to becoming a man-child or gender correct equivalency)

Be well and enjoy life.

2016: The year all pokemon comics died.

Probably not that dramatic but DANG, first STLE, now this? I'm sad to see it go, especially with the fact that it's right in the middle of the story. However, I know the feeling of wanting to reach a bigger audience and somehow get paid for doing the thing you love. So, best of luck to you good sir.

Thus hurts, but its okay I really enjoyed this comic (even if I did start reading it about 3 months ago) and it actually inspired me to start making a fan-fic story like it. (of course irl paper, so no reading! >.<) And it was fun while it lasted. Alot of beginner comics actually push to hard and post EVERYDAY and quit at the 9th page. But honestly, real life is more important then making this. I do hope you do this again one day, but for now, a goodbye and farwell to you Being.

To be honest, I checked to see if it was April 1st when I saw this post. No such luck.

I'm sad to see you go, I had a lot of fun with this comic, especially the regular commenting. I also totally understand the struggle of real life and work, and when your work is so closely related to your hobby, it can be tiring. Hopefully you'll do well out there though, you certainly are a good artist (and much better than me and my stick figures). I also wouldn't beat yourself up over fan count. The fact of the matter is this comic is better than about 90% of the other things on this site. Really, the issue is just many people probably don't like mixing sci-fy with Pokemon.

Anyway, I just want to say I enjoyed this comic a lot. It was awesome seeing you improve over the years, and the story was pretty unique, especially since most people stick with comics nearly identical to games. While still fun, the more creative plots, or at least the ones which take lots of liberties with the original story, leave me wondering what will occur next, and in my opinion, are better comics (for the most part). So I just want to thank you for the fun comic you offered, especially considering the time it took you to make it. It was nice to see an update on Saturdays, and the surprise of a new chapter cover. I think getting so far is something to be proud of though. I just want to say once more you did a good job and I'll miss this comic, good luck on your future endeavors. (And, if willing, I would also like to hear how the story concludes)

This really comes as a shock to me, but I can accept it. I loved Pokemon Beta the moment I started reading it. It kept pulling me in more the more I read it. It became a kind of constant to me. I used to wake up every Saturday and check for an update or patiently wait through the hiatuses. I was always reading, even if I wasn't always commenting. The art and story were an inspiration. I'll miss Pokemon Beta for sure, but it's understandable that you want to move on with your life and not waste it on a comic that will touch only a small audience.

Good luck in life, Being.

(As for questions, could you perhaps touch down a little more on the characters' backstories? Also, who is Ghost and what is his significance? And what happened to Rymadanas?)

Hey... Goodbye :). Your story was very interesting for me and obviously for the others. Thank you, just thank you for your work on it ^^.

I am sad to see this happen, but of course I understand. Good luck to you then, my friend.

It felt like something was missing from SJ today. I just realized it was this. :C

Reply QuirkyButterfree, January 10th, 2016, 8:11 am

*cries* I definitely will miss this comic... It was one of the most original Pokemon ones on SmackJeeves, and your art skills are really good!

Good luck in college, though!

(and if you ever want to come back to this, we won't mind.)

Reply SparkySharkhead, January 12th, 2016, 10:39 pm

@the being
I understand, there is just more to life you want to find, there is always a bigger opportunity out there. So get out there and be the best of who you are.

If it feels any better, maybe you can be an inspiration. Just think about all those people who read this comic. They could start art or webcomics. Just know that even when one tale closes, there are generations to rise, meaning that someone else's story will be made because you made yours. I'm proud to have met you and all your friends on Smackjeeves and DeviantArt. And yes, good luck on getting through college and getting a job.

Maybe with your skills you still have the chance to follow the path to having a job that involves your artistic ability.
